Description of the coin

The obverse of the coin features a stylised, dynamic Eiffel Tower, appearing to take its run-up to compete in the Games. To its right stands the Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde basilica of Marseille, and to its left a tiaré flower from Tahiti: a nod to the diversity of the Olympic venues, from mainland France to its overseas territories. An athletics track unfolds in the background.

A striking detail: the “arms” of the Eiffel Tower are made up of 73 rivets, referring to the 73 host communities of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Below the design, the Olympic rings and the Paralympic symbol sit together, united under the Paris 2024 emblem — an evocation of unity. The issuing country mark “RF”, the year “2024” and the Monnaie de Paris mint mark are visible. The outer ring bears the twelve stars of the European flag, common to all 2 euro coins.

The context

This coin is part of a series of four 2 euro commemorative coins dedicated to the Paris Games, struck by France between 2021 and 2024 — each with its own design, with this moving Eiffel Tower as the closing piece of the series, in the year of the Games themselves.

Engraver Joaquin Jimenez conceived an Eiffel Tower in motion, inspired by the momentum of an athletic gesture, to embody the spirit of the Games in a monument universally associated with France and Paris. With a circulation mintage of 24 million coins, it was widely distributed among the general public, making it one of the best-known French commemorative coins of the period.

Value & rating

Owing to its very large mintage (24 million coins), the standard version (UNC, uncirculated) remains very accessible and close to its face value: it is a coin any collector can easily obtain. Its collector value lies more in its thematic appeal (the Paris Games) than in scarcity.

The BU (Brilliant Uncirculated) and BE/proof versions, struck in far more limited mintages and sold in a case or on a coincard by the Monnaie de Paris, are by contrast more sought after by collectors and trade well above face value. The precise rating depends on the state of preservation and the version.
